harry-5-head-and-shouldersNearly 500,000 apprentices started their new careers across all sectors nationally in 2014/15, an increase in 14% from the previous year.(1) We are delighted to support this increase and  welcome on board our new Electrical Apprentice, Harry Cunningham to our team. Spurred on by his father’s 20 year long career as an Electrician with Lindale Building Services, Harry made the decision to follow in his father’s footsteps.

“I have just completed my A-levels and I was considering pursuing a degree, although I was undecided to which subject I wanted to pursue. So many options were open to me, but after chatting with my Dad I made the decision to follow his path and hopefully become a fully qualified Electrician in four years. This apprenticeship fits what I am after, on the job learning and a professional qualification all in one”.

David Myles, Director explains, “Harry is our lucky thirteenth apprentice we have taken on board in the past five years. All of our apprentices are fully supported to progress through their Electrical Installation Apprenticeship to Advanced Level 3 and I see Harry has all of the qualities to progress well. He shows initiative within his work and a customer focused outlook, as a business we are pleased to support the second generation of the Cunningham family in his career”.

Lindale Building Services go above and beyond the requirements of the standard electrical test and inspection service.

thermal-imagingUtilising a Fluke Thermal Imager Ti105, any abnormalities within the system which cannot be seen with the naked eye can be identified.

A thermal imaging camera is used to scan the electrical distribution boards, switch gear and other key components to detect signs of heat. Abnormal heat in an electrical system may indicate loose connections, high resistances, overloads or phase imbalances.

Potential problems can often be found due to excess heat being released by the component, even those which would normally produce high temperatures when performing at their optimal level.

If unnoticed these problems can lead to failure and can result in expensive production loss or downtime and, in severe cases, can lead to fire.

Survey Details

Thermal imaging is completed as part of our periodic testing. If any abnormalities are found by our infra-red technology, remedial works can be prioritised prior to becoming serious hazards. Thermal image surveys can be carried out during normal working hours, with no interruption or disruption to your organisation, however we are happy to carry out the survey out of hours and work around your schedule.

On completion of the thermal imaging test we will provide you with a comprehensive report using Fluke SmartView Software, featuring  thermal images and all temperatures of all areas surveyed.

The “body clock” or circadian rhythm cycle is affected by a number of external elements including light, temperature and environment. It regulates many psychological processes including eating and sleeping.

A white paper produced by Luc Schlangen, principal scientist at Philips explains:

  1. Production of melatonin, the hormone that helps to induce sleepiness and that regulates our sleep/wake cycle, is directly impacted by light. Not only natural light but also artificial light.
  2. Morning light is very powerful in adjusting our body clock and artificial light that mimics bright daylight is highly effective at regulating and synchronising our sleep/wake cycle.
  3. Light is key to overcoming both jet lag and “social jet lag” (the “Monday morning blues” feeling).
  4. Light influences our mood and reinforces a good sleep/wake cycle, thus contributing to our overall health and well-being

Within the market today, “tuneable white” office lighting is offered by many lighting manufacturers. For example, there is an option of setting the colour temperature throughout the day to stimulate natural daylight, moving from a warm white light in early hours of the day, to a cooler blue light through midday, onto a neutral and warm white late afternoon. It is clear the methodology of tuneable lighting supports individual’s productivity and the circadian rhythm at key times throughout the day.

Lindale Building Services offers the complete turnkey solution across the UK for your commercial lighting requirements, including installation of tunable white lighting. Offering the complete solution, from the initial survey to assess your needs and objectives, to a full tailored design, installation, maintenance and aftercare service. Lighting within the average building accounts for approximately 40% of the total electrical consumption.

If you wish to reduce your electricity bill, the most effective way to do this is to review the lighting, which in the situation of upgrading from traditional florescent lamps to LED can produce up to 80% less energy with no loss of light output.

Example: In a typical warehouse consisting of an installation comprising of 100 no. 400W Son Hi-Bay fittings, we can demonstrate savings in energy costs of up to £60,000 over a five year period – with capital pay back in under two years. This, coupled with the vast reduction in ongoing maintenance costs and optimising performance of operations, make the change even more appealing.

The government fully embraces the energy saving abilities for organisation’s to upgrade to LED. The Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme (ECA) is a government supported scheme, designed to encourage businesses to invest in energy saving equipment. Under this scheme, businesses can claim enhanced tax incentives or relief into new LED upgrades that meet certain energy-saving criteria. It provides 100% first-year capital allowances (tax relief).

The ECA scheme covers four categories:

  1. Amenity, accent and display lighting
  2. General interior lighting
  3. Exterior area lighting
  4. Exterior floodlighting

Lindale Building Services can assist you with not only making your business more efficient through upgrading to LED, but support you with potentially creating substantial long term energy and carbon savings. Offering the complete turnkey solution, we can provide electrical design, tangible energy saving calculations, payback periods, installation options and aftercare. Deterioration is inevitable with age and electrical installations are not immune to this, requiring inspection and testing at regular intervals to ensure satisfactory condition and continued use.

Periodic inspection and testing reveal if electrical circuits or equipment is overloaded, highlights defects and identifies potentially lethal risks and fire hazards. Neglecting faulty electrical equipment and your building’s fixed wiring could result in injury, damage to your building, lost income and fines if found in breach of your statutory legal responsibilities.

Timescales

The Electricity at Work Regulations state all electrical systems and equipment used in the work area should be in a safe condition. This means that the testing and inspection schedule must be implemented at all workplaces. The frequency of the inspection depends on the type of installation and what it is being used for, this varies between 3 months and 10 years. Detailed below in accordance with the guidelines laid down within the Institution of Electrical Engineers Wiring Regulations BS7671:2008 (as amended) and other relevant legislative guidance notes.

Thermographic Surveys

Evidencing the importance of these inspections, the picture to the right shrcbo-burnoutow an RCBO discovered on a recent project obviously overheating and amazingly still in operation.

Lindale Building Services offers the additional reassurance of avoiding similar hazards via our thermal imaging service. This service is offered as an enhancement to our current electrical circuit testing, identifying any hidden hazards not seen to the naked eye. Utilising infrared thermographic equipment, our electronic thermographic survey report provides a clear indication of the suspected cause of the fault, the severity of the problem and the remedial action required to repair.

The benefits of using Lindale Building Services Ltd to conduct an electrical thermographic survey include:

  • Power is not interrupted during a survey
  • This is a predictive maintenance technique reducing the risk of fire due to early detection of any faults
  • We only use high resolution thermal imaging equipment which allows us to detect faults on smaller components and allows us to keep a safe distance from potential faults
  • Insurance companies provide positive feedback on our service and follow up activities
  • There is potential to gain a reduction in your business insurance by having a thermographic survey conducted

Lindale Building Services is accredited by the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contractors (NICEIC) and our services are underpinned by our ISO 9001 certified Quality Management System. Get in touch and see how we can help you.

The Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 requires electrical installations within a domestic property to be both safe when the tenancy begins and maintained throughout the tenancy.

Legally holding responsibility for the electrical installation within the dwelling, the Landlord must ensure the lindale-thermal-inspectionelectrical installations are in full working order. It is suggested Landlords have a full electrical inspection and test at each change of occupancy, or as a minimum every five years.

The Electrical Safety Council Landlords’ Guide to Electrical Safety in Scotland claims; “The three major dangers to persons from electrical accidents in the home are from electric shock, fire and burns. The causes of such incidents are varied but include: deterioration of the electrical installation broken accessories and equipment misuse of the installation and equipment occasional vandalism, and inconsistent or inappropriate maintenance programmes”.

The Housing Scotland Act 2006 takes this requirement one step further. With recent changes to the legislation, sections 13(4A) and 19B(4) had made the periodic test and inspection to tenanted properties mandatory. Under these requirements and fixed wire electrical installation condition report must be carried out at least every five years. The report is also to include portable appliance testing report for all appliances not owned by the tenant.

These regulations have been in place from 1st December 2015 for new tenancies and 1st December 2016 for all existing tenancies.

As a certified NICEIC and ECA contractor, Lindale Building Services offer both fixed wire test, inspection and reporting and PAT testing services on a national basis.
