Nearly 500,000 apprentices started their new careers across all sectors nationally in 2014/15, an increase in 14% from the previous year.(1) We are delighted to support this increase and welcome on board our new Electrical Apprentice, Harry Cunningham to our team. Spurred on by his father’s 20 year long career as an Electrician with Lindale Building Services, Harry made the decision to follow in his father’s footsteps.
“I have just completed my A-levels and I was considering pursuing a degree, although I was undecided to which subject I wanted to pursue. So many options were open to me, but after chatting with my Dad I made the decision to follow his path and hopefully become a fully qualified Electrician in four years. This apprenticeship fits what I am after, on the job learning and a professional qualification all in one”.
David Myles, Director explains, “Harry is our lucky thirteenth apprentice we have taken on board in the past five years. All of our apprentices are fully supported to progress through their Electrical Installation Apprenticeship to Advanced Level 3 and I see Harry has all of the qualities to progress well. He shows initiative within his work and a customer focused outlook, as a business we are pleased to support the second generation of the Cunningham family in his career”.

Utilising a Fluke Thermal Imager Ti105, any abnormalities within the system which cannot be seen with the naked eye can be identified.
A thermal imaging camera is used to scan the electrical distribution boards, switch gear and other key components to detect signs of heat. Abnormal heat in an electrical system may indicate loose connections, high resistances, overloads or phase imbalances.
Potential problems can often be found due to excess heat being released by the component, even those which would normally produce high temperatures when performing at their optimal level.
If unnoticed these problems can lead to failure and can result in expensive production loss or downtime and, in severe cases, can lead to fire.
Survey Details
Thermal imaging is completed as part of our periodic testing. If any abnormalities are found by our infra-red technology, remedial works can be prioritised prior to becoming serious hazards. Thermal image surveys can be carried out during normal working hours, with no interruption or disruption to your organisation, however we are happy to carry out the survey out of hours and work around your schedule.
On completion of the thermal imaging test we will provide you with a comprehensive report using Fluke SmartView Software, featuring thermal images and all temperatures of all areas surveyed.

Deterioration is inevitable with age and electrical installations are not immune to this, requiring inspection and testing at regular intervals to ensure satisfactory condition and continued use.
Periodic inspection and testing reveal if electrical circuits or equipment is overloaded, highlights defects and identifies potentially lethal risks and fire hazards. Neglecting faulty electrical equipment and your building’s fixed wiring could result in injury, damage to your building, lost income and fines if found in breach of your statutory legal responsibilities.
Timescales
The Electricity at Work Regulations state all electrical systems and equipment used in the work area should be in a safe condition. This means that the testing and inspection schedule must be implemented at all workplaces. The frequency of the inspection depends on the type of installation and what it is being used for, this varies between 3 months and 10 years. Detailed below in accordance with the guidelines laid down within the Institution of Electrical Engineers Wiring Regulations BS7671:2008 (as amended) and other relevant legislative guidance notes.

Legally holding responsibility for the electrical installation within the dwelling, the Landlord must ensure the
electrical installations are in full working order. It is suggested Landlords have a full electrical inspection and test at each change of occupancy, or as a minimum every five years.
The Electrical Safety Council Landlords’ Guide to Electrical Safety in Scotland claims; “The three major dangers to persons from electrical accidents in the home are from electric shock, fire and burns. The causes of such incidents are varied but include: deterioration of the electrical installation broken accessories and equipment misuse of the installation and equipment occasional vandalism, and inconsistent or inappropriate maintenance programmes”.
The Housing Scotland Act 2006 takes this requirement one step further. With recent changes to the legislation, sections 13(4A) and 19B(4) had made the periodic test and inspection to tenanted properties mandatory. Under these requirements and fixed wire electrical installation condition report must be carried out at least every five years. The report is also to include portable appliance testing report for all appliances not owned by the tenant.
These regulations have been in place from 1st December 2015 for new tenancies and 1st December 2016 for all existing tenancies.
